Quantum of Solace, eh?
I don't mind it actually, and as long as they get the marketing right I can't see it as a problem. What would you think a film called Cloverfield was about then?*
*clips of the monster now widely availabe on Youtube etc. A touch of the Harryhausen's about it, which is a nice surprise.

Comparing james Bond to reality then thinking it is shite is being dismissive of two very important points.
1. Its only a movie.
2. Designed to entertain
If you want realism (ish) may I suggest the Bourne films : Identity, Spremacy and Ultimatum...But even they are about entertainment.
Lets face it, a real spy movie would be something like The Russia House....
Zzzzz

True they are entertainment and there is obviously a market for them
I'd not seen a Bond film in over 20 years until about a month ago.
All the hype seemed to say that casino royale was different to all the
others - so I gave it a go.
Unfortunately it seemed the same as all the rest but minus Q or R
Not a bad film and Craig was OK but nothing really new in it

Fleming based the original James Bond character on himself.

Bit of trivia.
When he started writing the books Ian Fleeming was trying to come up with a name for his secret agent.
He lived in the West Indies at the time, and on his bookshelf he had a book called "Birds of the West Indies" written by a certain James Bond.
So he used the name and the rest is history.
