Bob's right. I recall as a teenager people in their 40s and older saying that my generation were rubbish, all yobbos, that a spell in the army would put us right---if not the return of corporal punishment.

We all turn into our dads or grandads at some stage, and start harking back to some golden era that never existed. You think today's youth are scum? Check the newspapers from the late 1970s to see what Joe Public thought of the punks, or from the late 1950s to see the horror generated by the teddy boys.

Unfortunately you are probably correct, we have always been a warlike people. In Europe generally people co-exist quite amicably and violence is usually perpetrated as a means to an end,eg robbery.

They don't seem to have the mindless vi0olence that we have.

Personally I think the a paramilitary force should be formed, armed armed and able to function using maximum force where appropriate. They could be called the ''Anti Social Squad'', they would have one function, to bring civilisation to the streets. They would be able to function outside the normal powers of arrest procedures, however they would carry CCTV cameras permanently filming and evidence would be taken from this footage. It would be illegal for an officer to remain on duty if their cctv wasnt functioning.

In this way, if a foul mouthed hoody wanker was resisting arrest, it would be quite reasonable for the officer to give him a good kicking as required.

The idea is that groups of anti-social louts would live in terror of them.

If the sole function of these officers was to prevent anti-social behaviour, I cannot see how this could be abused. The cctv footage could be used to prosecute a police officer if he exceeded his powers, for example, lined up a group of hoodies and executed them!

here's a bit of the Human Rights Act, that in my opinion is being undermined by the lack of policing and government lack of responibility.

Is the government ensuring this right? An interpretation of this could be that people who act anti socially are stopping me from excercising , "My right to go about my business in safety."

They certainly do breed - particularly if given free reign by the state, their 'rights' respected and regular, nurturing, hand outs of unconditional benefits. In such benevolent circumstances profuse propagation is only to be expected.

Great minds think alike, Jim. I too proposed a similar plan a while back - only my paramilitary force would have been called the "CHAVBUSTERS". Likewise they would have been empowered to reclaim the streets by knocking seven bells out of malevolent street scum and nasty nere-do-wells.

And you've put your finger on it, Steve. Let's not be naive, crimes----some awful crimes---are being committed. But they always were. What's changed is the rabidness of the reporting, the sensationalising of statistics.

I'd like to know just when Dibbsy's golden age was. Rapists, murderers, paedophiles, druggies existed in the 1940s, and the 20s, and they certainly existed in the 19th century. And the 18th, Go far enough back, and there's little recorded crime---because a psychopathic squire or sadistic lord of the manor could do what he bloody well wanted.

Tell me when we were free of crime committed by young yobs, Officer, and I'll programme the coordinates into the Tardis and we can all go and bask in the glow of Utopia.

Well, I've already spoken about being a young lad in the 60's and how totally different things were to today. So if indeed youths were committing crime back then it would be something relatively benign, like nicking lead off the church roof to earn a few quid. What you don't want to confront is that there is now a wholly different attitude amongst today's young. They have no values; they have no sense of right or wrong. They have no respect for any authority and, most alarmingly, as we have seen, no respect for the lives of others. Back then there were virtually no nonchalant killings or serious harming of others, no punching someone?s grandma black and blue for her pension on her way home from the Post Office on a Thursday. There was no lipping coppers or teachers or your parents - you just didn?t do it, even in a working class industrial slum where I spent my early years. It's no good saying it's just the same now as it was back then. It's clearly not - something has changed.
