Ah tony benn the same man who said on question time recently that the soviet union were not much of a threat during the cold war and life on the other side of the iron curtain wasn't that bad, tell that to poland or any other eastern european country.

I have seven colleagues, who I know pretty well, who used to live "behind the Iron Curtain".

One of them is happy that the Soviet Union collapsed, although her family are not (she was able to defect to the US on a professional visit and has made a good career there).

The other six bitterly regret the end of the Soviet Union, as do their families and everyone they know. Their general consensus is that the people who are happy that the Soviet Union came to an end are "greedy bastards and criminals".

The problem is they were conditioned to live in that system and have not known anything different.

They are Russians, I guess? Russia has been taken over by the Mafia since the Iron Curtain came down. For the man in the street hardly anything has changed for the better.
Most Poles, Czechs or Estonians, to name but a few peoples, certainly do not recall the Communist period with nostalgic longing. Their situations have really improved.

I did visit Riga, and the occupation museum too. What most impressed me was an arrest warrant exhibited there. The reason for the arrest? Being a Latvian!
