Uh? Are we? Show me a European country that's more tolerant and less racist than the UK. (the right wing parties of The Netherlands have way more influence on politics than our own BNP).

Which is more about culture than race, so you've just backed up my point. Having said that: I feel uncomfortable in betting shops. Never been a gambler cos it's a mugs game. I don't expect anybody to be an addictive, gambling alcoholic to adopt British culture....lol.

Or, you could say that the reason we have the lowest -per capita- racial hatred in the whole of Europe is due to Powell's speech waking people up to the dangers of bigots and fascists......so in reality, Powell helped.

I simply disagree. You only have to hear footy chants throughout Eastern Europe, Italy, Germany, Spain etc to give you an indication on racial hatred, or bigotry. We are waaaaay ahead in being clued up on multi-racial/cultural differences and respect. We're no way perfect of course, but compared to the world in general, we're angels.
