ITV used to show excellent programmes virtually every night. One of the best documentaries ever produced - 'The World At War' - was shown on ITV. Hard hitting, tough investigative programmes such as 'World In Action' were also excellent. They also produced high quality productions such as 'Sherlock Holmes', and of course one of the best shows ever - Minder.
I barely watch ITV these days. It's wall to wall tacky rubbish whose only appeal is to the lowest common denominator.

A comparison of their football coverage relative to the Beeb's says it all: ITV is garish, bland and tries too hard.
A very poor, sick and lame cousin of the BBC, even with the Beeb in decline.

ITV haven't had a successful sitcom since 'Rising Damp' - that was 30 years ago!
A couple of years ago I heard an ITV senior executive admit that they don't do comedy any longer as it's too expensive to produce.

ITV had the monopoly on ad revenue then, now its shared amongst scores of satillite stations. So they hit upon the idea of 'vote for me" shows, which rely on suckers phoning premium rate numbers to finance the show.
Trouble was, the sort of show that appeals to the people likely to phone up is pretty low end stuff, resulting in fewer viewers, resulting in even less ad money, resulting in even more 'financed by phone' shows, fewer viewers, less ad revenue......................

ITV is churning out the usual shite, but to be fair they now are at least trying to develop some new ideas and shows - the problem being they don't seem to be that great at putting a decent end product out.
Ch 4 imho is the best channel on TV at the moment with BBC2 not that far behind, I like a channel that doesn't take the easy option of importing endless American tripe.

ITV was better in the 60s/70s.

ITV died the day it got rid of it's franchises such as ATV,Granada,Yorkshire,Thames etc.
ITV used to broadcast quality TV like The Sweeney,On The Buses,Minder and too many other programmes to mention.
All you get now on ITV is programmes with sponsors, cunts who think they can sing and muggy commentators like Clive Tyldsley who think they're funny.
Now we have ITV2 which shows repeat after repeat of ITV1 programmes or programmes showing Z-list trash like Jordan and Wayneyetta Rooney.
There's me thinking Television was meant to be educational and entertaining !whistle!
