A few of them look amazing - most of them look ludicrous.

And as for Colleen Rooney: put a pikey chav scouse bird in a ridiculously-priced frock - and she's still a pikey chav scouse bird.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Back in the day, you used to have to do something truly remarkable to become a celebrity - like win Wimbledon, climb Everest or sail single-handed round the world. Stuff like that.

Celbrity was a status that was earned.

That's not how it works any any more. These days, all you need to do to become "famous for being famous" is make a twat of yourself on some daft "reality" show or (if you're a female in your early 20s) become some footballer's arm-fluff - and lo & behold you're an instant "celebrity" with your own TV show and your airbrushed face staring out from magazine racks up and down the land.

In these days of "instant celebrity" and for 20-something females especially, it's all about how you look who you're shagging that's the key. Fuck-all to do with talent, endeavour, personality or hard work.

What I want to know is what (or who) is Colin Jackson pointing at! Anyway, I'd thought he'd given up racing now.

I hear what you say about the style sense (or lack of it) that prevails among young women today, Dibs. And I agree that it's a sorry state of affairs (look at old photos and film footage from the 40s and 50s and even into the 60s - women really were women back then).

But overpriced, garish frocks, big floppy hats, a few ruffles and a bit of fake fur aren't the answer if their wearers don't have the look and the figure to carry it off - which a lot of these birds don't.

I'm not claiming to be any sort of fashion expert or anything like that, but I'd have thought that Rule Number 1 (whether you're male or female) is "dress to suit".

Even larger women can look sexy and stylish if they choose the right outfit - but just take a gander at some of those weighty birds and what they've got on: Those sleeveless low-cut dresses do them no favours whatsoever (putting it kindly there).

Can't share your enthusiasm for this bunch I'm afraid, Officer, and I'd say that the 'style criminals' outnumber the head-turners by about 3 to 1.

Some of these ladies have made a great effort to shake of the chavdom image which punctuates large sections of of media and popular culture. It's fair to say that their efforts resulted in varying degrees of success.

Yes but if push came to shove Trumpton you would grab your saddle and whip for most of them ...

"When you see people flocking for a handout en masse like this it makes the decadent way people dress and behave at an idiotic horse race seem quite immoral actually. It's a cultural phenomena when you can see the huge gulf between the haves and the have nots."

So, no doubt you'll be donning the old kitchen apron and hoofing it down to the Strand to help out of an evening?

But I don't see how you can equate scouser birds at Aintree (who probably work in the local Netto store) with affluent decadence. Hey, they've only smartened themselves up for a day at the races - a few hours escapism in the glamorous world of Alex and Colleen. Surely they deserve that?

Don't I know it. I was watching my 'Cleopatra' Special edition DVD, staring the fabulous Liz Taylor, just the other evening. What an incredible beauty she was back then.

Well, all I know is that the pictures immediately gladdened my heart ? you know, instinctive like. After 2-3 years of seeing nothing but skanky denim wearing chav birds, looking like shite, walking up the High Street and down the local Mall, it made me sit up in a flash.

I don't know, Eric. There were some pretty impressive cleavages (remember those?) on show. And of course - the bigger the bird, the bigger the cleavage.
