The purpose of the Roman Catholic Church was to sell its religion, Christianity, to Rome---so a lot of other religious rights and festival dates were wrapped up in it to make it easier for the Romans to take. The architect of the religion was St Paul, who never met Jesus and who, with his followers, tried to airbrush Jesus's Jewish roots out of history and make their product palatable to the rulers of the known world.
The Mafia is a continuation of much of Italian society from the middle ages and earlier (check out Romeo And Juliet, and change Capulet or Montague to Corleone). The second series of the excellent Rome showed the politics in the aftermath of Caesar's assassination as being just like feuds between criminal gang lords, and there's an argument that Pompey and Caesar themselves before that were also mafia bosses.
Since much of our political heritage comes from the Roman model, what does that say about us?
Halle-fuckn-lujah
