The problem is, they are not being assimilated.
We do not have a British People now, as we did for many centuries. (Regardless of the utter codswallop being spouted by the likes of "colonel", we did in fact have a very stable, distinct populace from, at least, time immemorial until after the Second World War).
What we have now are numerous, separate populations, each with their own, distinct culture.
Not good.

What is this "British People" Steve?
Is it language? No look at Switzerland
Race? No, look at the Unites States
Religion? No, look at India
Common history? No, look at any newly created nation
Culture? No because there are many sub cultures within any group of people
Geographic location? No, look at the Zionists before Israel.

I agree with Steve r's Post however its only good on paper, i was born here and have done my best to fit in but it just dosent work as at the end of the day they always see you as different.
