The media want to draw you in to making those kinds of judgements on the grounds of 'deserving'. They are as they were portrayed by Spitting Image - scum swilling swine.
Strange and stranger.

"There is no evidence that Shannons mum loved her daugher any less than the McCanns loved Madelaine, but its easy to pour scorn on working class people with low intelligence,"
Well, I don't know about that. I guess we'll have to wait and see what comes out in court. But, after numerous television reports and interviews on the Matthew's street, it seemed to me like that whole freakin' estate were a load of scum sucking pikey, chav, retards. This is not so much poring scorn on them as a statement of fact. They were so monumentally stupid and cretinuos that they kept wearing their chav clobber (i.e. baseball caps and striped tracky bottoms) for their interviews. They had absolutely no idea what a set of twats they looked and the stereotypical image their were consolidating in the mind of the general populace. The people we saw on that estate were not the working class; they were the stupid, benefit dependent, underclass. It came to a point where the Old Bill were arresting one or two of them every evening! I thought - Jeez, if this carries on they?ll have the whole Muppety Street banged up by the end of the week!
There nothing positive you can say about them - It's not only easy to porn scorn on such people, it's the natural thing to do. A socio-biological defense mechanism.

If they are to be believed it must be neglect..the murderer would not have had the opportunity. The children were not able to defend themselves.Thats why such laws are in place. They need to go to court..to send a wider message about the fact that such behaviour is unacceptable.Punishing the McAnns with anything other than some sort of community punishment would be ridiculous.

Class shouldn't have any bearing on anything. We are all equal under the law (or so it goes).

It's not only easy to pour scorn on such people but also very comforting and self congratulatory. You describe it as a defense machanism ... what is it defending against exactly ?

Ah, spoken with the earnest naivety of one who has grown up in a leafy land of plenty. A place where caring sharing mummies and daddies imbue their privileged offspring with fashionable values and morality - safe in the knowledge that those values may never be tested in the real world.
"You describe it as a defense machanism ... what is it defending against exactly?"
Use your imagination. Take a Darwinian perspective - what might a species be programmed to defend itself against?

Your assumptions about what informs my point of view are an excuse not to acknowledge it. Avoiding the issue. As for the Darwinian thing .. sounds like Keith Joseph.

As is your response to my charges of middleclass naivety and self imbued moral superiority. But I had no intention of dodging the issue. I just didn't think I needed to address it after exposing your motives and reasoning. Your charge wasn't to be taken seriously - it was silly and pretentious. However, if you insist -
I didn?t feel particularly comforted or self congratulatory while discussing the Matthew?s and their pikey pals at all. Rather an antagonized weariness. A rancorous acceptance of the human condition. I don?t like it; I can do little about it. But I won?t gloss over it.
