It also helps whether the 'underdog' has the confidence and determination to beat the likes of the Williams sisters. It also helped when top seeds like Ivancovic, Jancovic,Sharapova and Davenport all got ko'd in early rounds, whom either would of faced Venus or Serena had of they prevailed in their matches.

The theory that Venus and Serena share their successes to avoid extreme sibling rivalry,i also find ridiclious.

Only current form can change the seedings system.

It was'nt long ago the F.A wanted to seed the F.A Cup,this would mean that the elite Premiership sides would not face each other untill at least the semi final, should they win their previous round of matches.Though rumours are rife, though not proven that the draw does contain 'heated balls' so the big boys don't meet each other early, hence, getting a big 'all premiership' final every year, which had'nt of Barnsley and Pompey ko'd Chelsea and Man Utd respectively,we would of certainly had another all premiership final.

With tennis it's different, because the draw is already mapped out,so one knows who they face in the final if all goes to plan,as we have seen with Federer and Nadal facing each other again,in what should be another epic match.

I was sad (and surprised) to see Henin go as well. One of the few stand-outs in a generally poor (by earlier standards) women's field.

And from what I've seen of them, the current crop of blonde Russian babes that Lizard mentions also - for the most part - seem of-a-muchness and largely interchangeable (playing-wise and indeed looks-wise) and nothing spectacular either in terms of potential to rise above the pack.

As I wrote above, in Grand Slam finals Serena is leading Venus 5-1.

So the theory that they are sharing successes is a bit lame isn't it?

The ranking and seeding system in any sport is a bit complex.I'm sure it goes down to matches/games played across the year and how convincingly one wins and how consistent their form is.

The rankings system in Golf is based on success on the US/European PGA tour, yet some Golfers prefer to stay on the European tour(for whatever reason),yet still ranked higher than their American counterparts.

In the UEFA Champions League, the seedings are based on experience in the competition in recent years, yet Newcastle,Chelsea and Celtic are seeded higher than Bayern Munich, who have actually won the competition 3 times(i think)

{Chelsea earned their seeding after Juventus were expelled from the competition in 2006 amid the Serie A matchfixing scandal.}

The UEFA club rankings for the Champions League are based on the last 5 years.

Chelsea are currently ranked 3rd.

Its probably already been said but Wimbledon is different to all the other majors in that preference is given to noted grass court specialists

According to the wimbledon page no changes were made to the draw this year to accomodate anyone so it was pure luck they didn't meet

LADIES' SEEDS
The seeds are the top 32 players on the WTA Tour rankings. The seeding order will follow the ranking list, except where in the opinion of the Committee, the grass court credentials of a particular player necessitates a change in the interest of achieving a balanced draw. This year, no changes were made in the singles

Yes but if you had to produce a forehand winner down one of their tramlines what one would you choose "Lardy Arsed Ten Tonne Tess" or Startled Crow "Big Bird" Venus ...

I think personally I would fire my balls into the net.
