I still think for most Scottishness is not the issue. Brown has so

Well, that's hardly an accurate summary of the foregoing.
Perhaps if we weren't treated to an endless procession of political
incompetents and talentless 'celebrities' we might be less prone to
so unjustifiedly slagging them off, do you think?
Yes, Brits are hard on those who do well [IMO largely because we're
well aware that in life luck often plays a greater part than talent],
but that's our way- we're also usually pretty fair. If a man does a
good job, then fine; it's when he resorts to hypocrisy, egomania or
dishonesty that we tend to get a little critical.

When the northern working mens' clubs were still going strong I
visited quite a few, and they had acts every bit as good as you'd
see on telly. The difference? Sheer luck of the draw; one got the
break, the others didn't.
