I was working in W14 when Minder was being filmed, and used to
drink in the Old Parr's Head [you see it a fair bit in the series]. A
lot of the exteriors were shot off Blythe Road.

Another, long gone, is the opening-sequence to 'Bottom' is the
old Hammersmith Broadway, before it was turned into a permanent
traffic-jam. Across the road near Sacred Heart school was a thesp's
agency- and I used to, um. bump into Kate O'Mara quite often-
God, she was TINY- and gorgeous Holly Aird..

Lots of facts from people listed that I have found very interesting. Apparently the restaurant scene in Four Weddings And A Funeral where High Grant and Andy McDowell have lunch and she lists the 32 people she has slept with in her life (I think it was 32) was filmed in The Dome cafe
in Covent Garden, London. Someone told me that years ago.

If you like The Avengers, and similar British 60s TV shows, Avengerland is great for pinpointing locations, many of which are sadly now gone. A large swathe of North West London and out into Herts and Beds, because it was close to Borehamwood, features an awful lot.

Most (all?) films have a "Filming locations" section.

If Peter Rogers, the Carry On producer, who died the other day, had produced Zulu, it most certainly would have been shot here, probably on Camber Sands or somewhere as cheap. After all, he made Snowdonia stand in for the Khyber Pass, (I've been to the KP and it ain't a lot like North Wales) in Carry On Up the Khyber.

As a matter of fact, Black Park in Iver near Pinewood, stands in for Transylvannia in loads of Hammer pics as well as some of C On Cowboy.

Kubrick made use of lots of places around London, the most obvious being Becton Gas works in FMJ, as well as Hatton Garden dressed to look like a Manhatten street in EWS.

Having read about the carry on films I remember reading they were made as cheaply as possible.

The Carry on where Barbara Windors bra shoots off into Kenneth Williams face (Camping?) was made in late Autumn (even though it was meant to be summer).

If you look at the ground in that scene you can see it is all muddy where the actors and crew have walked over the grass and made it all sodden.

I remember reading about another scene where Sid James was supposed to fall through a door or something. It took a while to set up (a false door etc) but the scene went wrong and it did not work.

Rather than wasting time setting the scene up and filming it again they just forgot about it and moved on and the scene was dropped from the film.

I guess most of the actors in it usually worked on TV so were willing to work fairly cheaply for a film that was made in just a few weeks.

The fact these films are shown all over the world, over and over again, means that someone is making lots of money from them.

Well, that is the state of affairs that producers hope for I suppose.

Guilbert. You mention how Carry On films were made in a few weeks. Another producer/director (aswell as actor obviously) who makes them quickly and pretty much all on location, is Sylvestor Stallone. Most of the 'Rocky' films were made in 28 days or less and I think the bulk of the scenes in the 'Rambo' films were too (apart from the mega action sequences which would have taken longer obviously). I quite like that 'raw' feel to a film that was made quite quickly (but not too quickly) and on location. Another case of this is the first two 'Mad Max' films.
