That's a good question, since the country is broke.
Or perhaps you think that a

I think the country could manage quite well without the legion of diversity awareness advisers, real nappy coordinators and five a day champions. The NuLabor crime family spunked our money on an extra half million "public servants" since 1997, all on final salary pensions. We can't afford them and we don't need them.

Really? If that's true, they failed. Thatcher never managed to bring public spending down, but under Blair/Brown it has gotten to ruinous extremes. Public spending is heading toward ?700 billion a year, and the fact is, it can't be afforded and can't go on. The party's over.

Robches,
Try to understand the difference between the real core of public servants in the civil service, local government, health, education, the services etc., who work quietly, efficiently and lfor pay that is only on a par with- and often less than - those with similar responsibilities in the private sector and the multitudes that inhabit the politically inspired quangos, or who are hired (and all parties have been equally guilty over the years) as "consultants" and are paid megabucks - far more than long serving and hard working public service professionals - for either pointing out the bleedin' obvious or for dreaming up half baked schemes which a two year old could point out either won't work or are under budgetted and and suddenly need 2x, 3x or even 10x the original budget to either complete or abandon.
Having worked in both sectors at the highest levels I can assure you that there is a great need for both front line workers and administrative back up and that Whitehall and County Halls are not full of lazy scroungers... but if you want to believe the rubbish churned out by the national comics masquerading as "news" papers feel free - you won't be the only one they've made a fool of.

What's your problem? Quangos spend ?130 billion a year. Do we need them? Most quango bosses earn more than the prime minister. It's piss taking on a massive scale. We need street sweepers and bin men, we don't need diversity officers. Can you see that? We don't need them, more to the point, we can't afford them. NuLabor thought they had abolished boom and bust, and went on the biggest spending spree in history. Public spending has doubled. Are the streets twice as clean? Do you get your bins emptied twice as often? No, half as often for many people. That's the problem, we are paying more and more for less and less, whilst offices across the country are filled with wastes of space who cost us a fortune in salary and pension. We will be keeping these fucks for the rest of their lives. It can't go on.

It's you who seems to have a problem in comprehension. You are repeating the point I made.
If I have a problem it's with people like you who seem to believe that all public servants are scroungers and only the private sector works efficiently - using false arguments, such as your point about pensioners and council tax, to try to give your your erroneous statements credence.
Good government at all levels needs professional leaders, managers, administrators and front line workers. To attract such people the remuneration and benefit packages have to reflect the responsibilities and abilities required - as in the private sector. If you think front line workers can operate without leadership, management and administration then you are very naive.
On the other hand, as has been stated for centuries, all power corrupts - and there have always been rulers/politicians only too willing to look after their cronies by giving them sinecures, creating unnecessary bureaucracies to promote their pet ideas and there are always enough people willing to work for them either through need or greed.
There is a massive difference between the real public service required to run a country and the so called public servants employed to promote political goals or pander to political theory.
Unfortunately the media, which should know better but has to have a headline, lumps everyone working for government together and cons you and others into believing there is nothing but waste in public service - an idea as ludicrous as calling the Sun, Express and Mail impartial organs of historic record.

You seem to have trouble reading anything I have written, so I can't be bothered with this thread any more.

Best thing to do when you don't have a reasonable argument is to walk away.
