'Rainman' was a great mathematician but needed contant supervision. Don't assume that 'cleverness' in one sphere means 'cleverness' in others. The guy had a compulsion to find out about UFO's, probably knew what he was doing was wrong, but couldn't help himself .. other people may argue their crimes are the result of compulsion but if they involve violence/ sexual violence, trespass, theft and robbery etc society is protected from the perpetrators by their removal to gaol.

Yes this guy's compulsion is potentially damaging but you have to assess the risk. What's the risk of a repeat offence of the same or similar seriousness ? Slim i'd say.

Some reports in yesterdays papers said he left messages on the computers he breached along the lines of "I can get in any time I want and bring your system down at will" which doesn't really tie in with the "just looking for UFO's" line he's now spinning.

He hacked into their main defence system single handedly and is now claiming he isnt smart enough to know any better??

The guy could of single handedly brought on a major disaster and for that reason alone he deserves the f*cking chair

Hammer, you should think about probabilities. There are lots of things that 'could' happen to us on a daily basis but so that we can leave our houses, go about our business and not live in a state of constant fear and anxiety we assess the probability and decide that although we are 'at risk' the probability of many of these awful things happening is low.

He could have brought on a major disaster but since his intent wasn't malicious i'd say this reduces the probability somewhat.
