Yes, exactly what I do when sleep wont happen is to imagine Emma (girl I used to work with 5 years ago and still think about) sitting on my face and wriggling while talking dirty. I make a mess and wipe it up and drift off to a deep sleep while still dreaming of Emma.

Interesting comments. I think living a partial cyber-life, like we all do, is all well and good, but it needs to be limited. I've decided I wont go online for more than half an hour at a time from now on.

Amsterdam is not a bad suggestion - I lived there for several years. But it's just another set of distractions.

It sounds like your ennui goes rather deeper than that - perhaps to where you are beginning to wonder why society is so constructed as to keep supplying its citizens with such distractions : sex, food, drugs, news, politics, tv, video games, films, the world of "business", the "modern art" game, digital technology......you name it. Modern living is an ultimately futile process of wanting one thing or another from birth to death.

There's always something "better to do" than pursue self-knowledge - the answer to the "who am I?" "why am I here?" and "how do I live?" questions. Even those closest to us don't feel comfortable if we start to question EVERYTHING.

By the way, there's a great book by Somerset Maugham called The Razor's Edge about just this subject (I also recommend Of Human Bondage by him). There's a DVD of Razor's Edge in HMV now for a fiver. I'd never seen it before and it is a true Hollywood oddity - a star actor (Tyrone Power) and yet a story so weird you wonder how it got past the typical crass-minded producer types who make such decisions.

If you don't fancy Maugham - who writes beautifully about reality (even its ugliness) - then the only alternative is P.G. Wodehouse (where nothing ugly ever happens). In my experience, it is possible to "die laughing" if you've got one of his books handy.

And if you can die laughing - and we've all got to go one day - you'll be well set up for what happens next............
