In the Imperial War Museum in London there is a scale model replica of the Ohio as she was when she was towed in to Malta. 1:48th I think. That is ? of an inch to the foot. She took a hell of a lot of damage.
If the cargo didn't catch fire and explode it was next to impossible to sink a tanker due to the dozens of tanks that made up the ship.

Another reason the Ohio didnt sink was because this happened in the calm waters of the Med, had this had been the North Atlantic she probably would have gone to the bottom, and i believe she ended up there anyway as after being offloaded in Malta i believe the Ohio was scuppered, but please correct me if im wrong.

The Med aint calm. The weather there is as fickle as anywhere, and even if the ship had been hit in the Atlantic she would not have sunk unless the cargo went up and blew the ship to bits.
The fact that the cargo of petrol didn't go up is what saved the ship.
