oej, I personally blame religion for most of the worlds problems - either now or over the last 2,000 years. This goes for Islam too, which I think is about 1,300 years old. People who are very religious feel they can do anything, and I mean ANYTHING because 'god' is on their side. George Bush and Tony Blair believed 'god' told them it was right to invade the two countries they did. Suicide bombers 'have god on their side'. Most death and destruction around the world comes because of religion, and because the people doing it have the divine behind them. The view some have that other people are wrong, very wrong, and deserve to die for it - that would not be in the minds of people if not for religion in my view. People against people, ideaology against ideaology, comes from the religious scriptures. This Christian god, Jehova (who bizarelly people regard as good) makes Adolf Hitler look like Ghandi if you read the Bible! There are things in the Bible which say "if you enter a city and any other god is worshipped other than me then you must kill every man, woman and child in that city, kill every animal in that city, and burn the city to the ground". Nice guy, hey?! The way people generally view others who have a differnt way of thinking than them, and see it as ok to kill them on mass for it, all comes from things like the Bible and the Koran.

>Im no fan of religion but I do appreciate what it means to those who need it, expecially in their hour of need or desperation.

Which is why I said it is Ok at a LOCAL level (a local vicar coming round offering help and support if a relative has died or your house has been flooded or whatever).

But priests dressed up in all their fineary with gold candlesticks everywhere, and waving a smoking bottle back and forward on a piece of rope !!!

Many years ago Galileo was planning to write a book about how the earth went round the sun (which he had proved with help from Copernicus).

Did the catholic church welcome this advance in scientific knowledge.

Did they heck, they threatened to throw him in prison.

Only when he promised NOT to publish the book did they change his sentence to just being under house arrest.

Bastards.

Max, in your explanation actually illustrated my point about people.

People perpetuate religion and the toughest thing is by banning it is imposing on peoples rights to believe what they want to believe.

It seems we on here look down on people who watch Big Brother and East Enders but the reason those shows exist is because of the demand of the people.

If religion is bad then its not the religion itself but the practice or the abuse of the person behind it.

Now now, you're much too critical over this. Afterall, the church did forgive Galileo for these teachings, and accepted them as the truth....

...in the year 1992.
If that doesn't make a person laugh, christian or atheist... :)
