I think the problem in these countries is that corruption is not even seen as corruption - it's just the way business is done there.
They must think we're mad to believe that aid money meant for the desperately poor will pass untouched through the hands of all the underpaid/not-paid-at-all officials, and then get past the numerous crime gangs and onto those who need it most. I wouldn't be surprized if the criminals actually think the money was meant for their 'just cause' in the first place.
The United Nations is supposed to be big and strong enough to push past these bullies, but they now have so many members with different agendas all pulling in different directions, they are impotent.

A repugnant comment. Not necessary.
A three point strategy is required:
1) Education:
Mandatory English lessons for parents.
Alternative Western ethics should be presented to children. (Tony Montana is not a saint)
2) Compulsory Outreach groups:
The African-Caribbean community need to engage in social integration projects. While the A-C community continue their stance, (Somalians are a joke/savages) then there will not be the catalyst for change.
3) Public Service Broadcasting/Arts council funding.
Somalian youth moral needs to be raised.
Positive depiction of Somalian youth in entertainment. A Somalian X Factor, Somalian families in East Enders, Somalian males depicted as attractive in magazines such as "Heat".
and with respect to the usual suspects on here who are quick to suspect that all bad news only comes from the Daily Mail, It is from the Sun:
LMFAO! If you'd posted a day earlier I'd have suspected an April fool. Is this the same 'Sun' that printed a story about Cambridge University stripping Nick Griffin of his degree only to find the story was taken from the University's student rag, that it was an April fools joke, and that it was written by an A-level kid? Top quality journalism that!
To them, Britain's streets are a soft, ripe-for-the-plucking goldmine of illegal cash.
And to some of you lot the poorer peoples of this world are nothing but a nuisance that shouldn't be given aid because some people within their societies are criminally inclined.

Yes. Punishing the most needy for the crimes of others is perfectly logical and moral, isn't it? Think about what you're saying.

Re: Somalia
You can partly thank the UN for the state of Somalia in the first place.

Re: Somalia
If porn historian means ban aid as then the corrupt officials have nothing to sell on,and thus might engage in a dialogue to find a solution,i can see his point-albeit whilst people starve...... Sam, can you explain why the UN are at fault as Im not up to speed on this issue, much as id like to be...... I suspect lower down the ranks/on the ground, they do a sterling job but higher up needs political willpower and the UN seems impotent to me ... Thanks.

Re: Somalia
Alternatively why not start a chinese whisper about there being oil discovered in Somalia and/or weapons of mass destruction.
I daresay something will be done then.
