And just incase anyone thinks I am a prehistoric fossil I should also point out that I recently bought one of JVCs S-VHS decks with a built in hard disc. Its great as you can just record onto the harddrive without the hassle of looking for a tape. Then transfer wanted material over onto vhs or s-vhs tapes.

Anyway what the fuck am I doing plugging JVC. They are the bastards that killed Betamax!

Yes. DVDs are very easy to copy, even 1:1, you just need a good fast PC and plenty of disk space. Ripped DVDs are where most VCDs and SVCDs started life. DiVX can certainly be copied to DVD. Microsoft's new anti-piracy gismo is already broken, not quite as easily for the amateur as the sticky tape or felt tip pen to break "copyproof" CDs but nevertheless broken. Warner Bros have been testing streamed movies which when downloaded will play for a 24 hour period and cannot be copied. Working copies of the tests are already widely availble on the internet.

The Microsoft drm system is in use by vidx.tv I have downloaded a number of full length movies form here, you rent for 7 days or buy it outright but sadly they don't seem to have any new ones at the moment. I agree that in the future this is how we will buy. The drm system works on one machine at a time, so whichever computer it was played on is the only one it works on. A portable system would be ideal, then you could install the movie to that disc, and then go and play it back from the TV set.
