You're lucky, Mike, in that the US judiciary is GENUINELY separated from the Legislature.....over here, successive Home Secs. insist on trying to interfere.
And usually (thankfully) end up with egg on their faces.
About time for a WRITTEN British Constitution.

Can still remember the Sodom Mobile.

'Stupid White Man' - my book of the year for sure, required reading for those interested in the US. It gives an insight into the pluses of the American system as well as the negatives.

Original was a Lukeford (I think) link which went back to local South Carolina press. A religious bigot had seen a video been watched in a public place (i.e. in someone's own home through the window!!!!) and reported it. Result - 6 months. I don't know about the status of appeals, etc.
The US isn't utopia and nor is it a dictatorship but its (in my view admirable) constitution does mean there are a wide variety of conditions and circumstances in various locations
