If you have a moderated forum, the mods/administrators are able to keep their eyes on
the ball and quickly put a stop to spam messages.
Spam messages can be easily posted in a forum even by "registered" members.
And let's be serious what autobot would be interested in a forum that no one in the world
has ever heard of?
EGAFD contents (discussion forum, actresses filmographies and movie titles) can be read by anyone.
You can only post messages if you "register", which is only fair.
Not being able to read/view anything in a forum without registering in my view is utter nonsense.

Registration was created for a lot more than just bots but some sites use it to fix known problems while others do it to farm emails

Just depends on how reputable the site is

A lot of image / file hosts have now gone down the registration route to protect themselves

On forums like bgafd before the commercial forum was built you had

Industry insiders who used to start threads asking what sites they could join for xyz playing the end user and then reply to themselves saying how great this site was

The worst of the lot were the trolls

We all used to use different user names in various threads
but never in a malicious way

Once registration was invoked most of the trolls
except those who were IT experts went away

It looks as if iafd have ditched the LJ pop-ups.

I'd love to take the credit but I suspect my moan was a mere drop in the
ocean of discontent [which is just south of the Sea of Tranquillity] : -)

I would not know, I still have the ad blocker on.
But I don't think that is the end of it.
In any event there is no way for IAFD to gauge users' discontent at such tactics.
There is no way to make them aware.

Don't be so pessimistic- the spirit of Ralph Nader lives on : -)
ADT moans would filter through, I guess- or they may simply have grown tired
of chucking all the hate-mail and death-threats in the trash folder : -))
