hi
Just wanted to say thanks for all the responses. In case it wasn't clear, the IUSW's open to anyone in the industry - producers, camera/sound engineers, actors. Hell, if you work in a factory packing DVDs you can join: we welcome everybody. Anyone who works in this industry is marginalised and the government think they can just push us around.
Although in some ways we're in competition with each other, the things that we have in common are stronger than the things that divide us - and if we allow ourselves to be divided, the people who actually benefit are the moralists and so-called feminists who want to destroy the whole industry.
As Terry said, one of the problems with recruiting to any kind of organisation is that lots of people in the business see themselves as only working short term (even though they may stick with it quite a while). But hopefully the benefits the IUSW offers will be of interest to at least some people - free legal advice, discounted tax and accountancy services, support with Health & Safety - the GMB have even got unfair dismissal payments for a bunch of people working for a phone sex line. And the union branch in London is going to run a series of events for union members, that'll range from the purely entertaining (I'm pushing for twister, but I'm kind of immature) to practical (legal issues) and skill sharing (Japanese rope bondage).
It feels weird making such a strong sales pitch-y kind of post - I'm not a double glazing salesman, honest.
Thanks again,
Cxx

UKAP are trying to make inroads with various factions like yourself Catherine. Pop over to www.ukadultproducers.com and see what kind of response you may get back.
Its about time this industry became more integrated for the reasons you stated.
The government dont assume they are pushing anyone around. They assume because it is fragmented the way it is that no one will contest this. If you have someobody on board who can act as spokesperson for the cause and argue it well I think you'd be surprised that maybe you can meet halfway.
Besides that where is it stated that the government plan to outlaw "paying for sex?", Last I remember that was the law anyway.
The difference it can be argued is that pornographers fall under the category of film makers and photographers and by doing this, technically it means that even main stream films cannot show explicit sex scenes or soft core because it would be considered illegal under the law as it is anyway.
