Excellent stuff Simon and it all goes to show what you can do these days with a "one stop shop" piece of hardware...if you know what you're doing! lol
Makes you wonder where it will all end??...."
Thanks Gaslight, I think I'm enjoying it more than normal video, more challenging so far.
Yeah I wonder where it will end, at first I thought stills cameras would be replaced with video cameras that take stills, but now I think it could go the other way, or a hybrid of the 2 (which the 5D is almost) - still early days and I don't think Canon quite knew what they were starting - firmaware updates are awsome so shows how much scope they have.

I was going to ask if anyone was using these cams and to what result. Trust Simon. Thanks for the info.
Considering getting one but not for the porno. Far too limiting as you said.
I have pro sound recording equipment and the external mic is probably only best for reference only.
Hi Terry
I think you should get one if it's not for porno, I've been shooting away at normal stuff like the cat or random objects while I'm learning and it's a lot of fun with results that have that cinematic feel, especially on tripod etc.
I could be wrong but I think you would need an audio adaptor to take XLR mic's, for the time being I bought a Rode Videomic, it's instantly better but like most things it needs manual audio rather than the auto, the footage I put up was actually using the Rode but it was too wide and picked up 2 noisy PC's at the side, but at least it doesnt pick up your hands focussing etc.

Thanks John
I've seen Amateur Allure stills using shallow depth of field but havent seen his videos do the same, understandably it would be a nightmare to keep focus on his action - love his mad swooping 360 degree pans though.

From what I hear quite a few people are using the 5D in the commercial field. We tested a 7D a while back with an old 30mm Sigma prime lens up against a Sony Z7E, and, under the same lighting, the footage appeared noticeably better from the Canon. I've been told that the sensor on the Z7E is quite a bit smaller than the APS-C the 7D and 550D use, so I am not at all surprised to see the excellent results you have achieved with a decent mid range Canon prime and a full frame sensor. So far the only negative comments I've heard regarding the current generation of Canons shooting HD is an issue with Moir?. However, I can't say I noticed this with our test footage, but that doesn't mean it might not be apparent under other conditions.
As regards sound, the CF card system used on both the Sony and the Canon does do away with tape hiss, but the onboard mic is pretty limited on the DSLR's. However, a cameraman I know has achieved very good quality using external kit, and when you consider the price of the 5D (approx ?1600), 7D (?1100) and especially the 550D (?700), even with a ?300 lens and a few hundred quid's worth of sound kit, you could still be producing this sort of footage at a quarter of the cost of the big Sony. Of course you would have to live with manual focus and an SLR is never going to be as versatile as a proper DV cam, especially in terms of events and sports coverage (you'd feel a bit of a plum interviewing someone with the Canon), but in a studio I'd say it's well worth considering, especially if you already have a selection of Canon lenses. Aside from the ultra shallow depth of field afforded by prime lenses, just imagine all the fun you can have with a wide angle.
On a different note, it does also bear mentioning that in terms of stills the low light level performance of all the current Canon and Nikon DSLR's is quite awesome, and can allow you to shoot in conditions which previously demanded a speed light. I do a fair bit of events stuff and this feature alone makes a 7D or 5D almost irresistible. I just wish I wasn't so borassic right now

also on 7d you can get auto focus but i wouldnt say it was very good with video and 12 mins or 8 gig which ever comes first
