it converts any videos even AVCHD as thats what I use.

You can convert it to any file type : MP4, MP4 AVC, M4V, AVI, WMV, MOV,etc. and HD videos such as HD MKV (H.264, MPEG-2), HD WMV (VC-1), MTS (AVCHD, H.264), M2TS (AVCHD, H.264), etc.

or even sound files like :WMA, MP3, M4A, AAC, AC3

not a band price either I have it for the mac

Just a follow up - Sony Vegas Pro is great, it's just that for MOV outputs it is strangely limited. The other outputs have more options than a mobile phone contract and so far I haven't found anything it can't do.

I did try both Pinnacle and Ulead and had major problems with both, on an otherwise clean machine, but I agree, if they do what you need they are a fraction of the price. I did my initial editing in the free Movie Maker, which works fine for basic stuff.
