I shoot tapeless and still backup on tape because like Jim says, HDrives are so unreliabe. I aso back up on 2 HDrives and DVD also (moving over to Blue Ray storage soon and dumping DVD) - is that overkill!!??

I'd say that's the problem with all storage media Jim. VHS/Beta, now it's small digital tapes. CD/DVD, now BluRay has been added. Compact Flash/SD/SDHD etc, etc.
I think you are right in that whatever storage is used we'll have to be continually transfering content to new media when it's released and becomes the norm.
New technology is often dressed up as "being better", "higher quality", "more convenient", blah blah blah when in reality it's for nowt else than to force the consumer to ditch what they already have because it's (deliberately) not compatible with the new.

Correct Jim but don't forget, tapes can be "wiped" or badly damaged if subjected to a very strong magnetic field (so keep them well away from your hifi speakers).
