Digital ICE is good for removing scratches, dirt etc., but Noise Ninja is also very useful for grain.

Great scan, the V750 is the Rolls Royce of the Epson range. Do you use the fluid mount?

No it bothered me too much how flammable the fluids where and no I don't smoke but it still bothered me.
To be honest I scan for web publication not print so max or near drum quality isn't necessary for my needs now
or in the future. I save all images as HiRes tiff files around 4.5mb and can drop them to what jpeg resolution needed.

This is a very good article if you haven't seen it on the v700/v750 scanners

As my work is very much lingerie glamour style and detail is quite important I get the results my members like for my old
film, neg or chromes and medium format B&W/Colour too.

A recent desktop that was a download success, 35mm neg, 264kb from a 4.5gb tiff it shows they stand up well.

I wish to thank everyone who has posted to give me advice.

Unfortunately it seems to be that I was expecting too much of results from the scanner I have.
I had expected that they would be at least as good as print quality from a slide.
As this scanner is all my budget will run to, it's looks like I will have to put up with it.
I had tried scanning some slides before using a Flatbed scanner, but the results were so poor I gave up. At least this unit gives better results than that.

Could someone tell me what Noise Ninja and Digital ICE are please. Are they programmes I can download?.

I am going to try using the 3600dpi setting on the scanner to see if the results are better even if it takes up more memory.

Digital Ice just cleans up scratches and dust/debris it won't improve the scan quality. The part about Kodachrome is true but playing with settings in the software can help if negs/chromes are scruffy. Never used Ninja so can't help there.

Does your scanner only have jpeg output or can you select tiff's ?? jpeg is a lossie format at best so it will keep destroying itself as you crunch it. Starting with tiffs at best resolution it's robust enough to to drop to lower jpeg file sizes for finished reults.

You will find most scanners the fiinished files are on the soft side so tiff's will allow various degrees of sharpening. The images above the first sets are soft jpegs from the scans and the last two girl image was sharpened a small amount.

Try the tiff setting and see if that helps.

Noise Ninja is software, ICE is software controlled, but your scanner needs to have the hardware to enable it to be used. Check to see if it has.

The vuescan software I mentioned previously will also output a (version of ) a RAW file. It's not like a camera Raw file, but it means you only have to scan the image once physically, then you can 'scan' it again from the digital file to mess around with different settings. Saves a lot of time, but takes up huge file space.

Download the trial, see if you like it.

Noise Ninja details here: http://www.picturecode.com/index.htm

You can download a trial copy. You should always save to TIFF as you can play around to your heart's content without degrading the file.

BTW though Noise Ninja is meant for removing noise from digital photos straight out of the camera it treats particularly slide grain as noise. The trick is - and it isn't easy to perfect - to balance between what us acceptable and what isn't - much easier to do with a neg than a slide and easier still in black and white.

Riley's comments on sharpening are also true and a good sharpening tool is useful. Photoshop has this as does Focal Blade.
