Maybe so, but as Japan was part of the Axis agreement, war with them meant war with Italy and Germany too. Keeping some beacon alight in Europe might have been more strategically important than going all-out for Tokyo immediately.

America's biggest goal during the first 50 years of the 20th century was to break up the British Empire.
2 World Wars did that perfectly. America wanted Britain pummelled until they were no longer as influential on the world stage, and then came to help.
The best thing that happened for America in the last 200 years was Nazism.
