All very carefully calculated to make us morons get used to the phrase. Just like they spent the 18 months before the election answering every political question with, "Of course, we will be in power after the next election . . . "

But 99.9% of politicians are lying, cynical toerags, so why we should expect anything different from the Snips?

The guys you named are the exceptions.

Face facts. In order to get to a place where you can effect change, you have to compromise, support things you don't believe in, and have to make nice with folk you perhaps despise. Consensus makes this a fact, just as consensus politics has us voting a political party's manifesto containing much we don't support.

I know, and that's why this system is the worst apart from all the others, as Churchill said.

As for Blair, I backed his decision on Iraq because of the reasons given at the time. Afterwards, I couldn't trust him at all---on anything. A simple public statement, "I got it wrong," would have deflected so much of the hatred he later faced. In society today, though, there are few people prepared to stand up and say, "I made a mistake. It's my fault."
