Pete, Jim. The biggest problem is I'm afraid that :-
a). I for one saw this coming 8 years ago ( And have been harping on about it ever since), and
b). None of us seem to know what to do or want to do anything about it.
The way things are going down hill so fast now I wonder if soon we will have pay the distributors to market our films for us as well ( FUCK I haven't given them an idea have I ). It's gone way beyond pathetic.
Like you I don't neccasarily blaime the girls. Market forces is market forces and they gotta earn some dosh. And Jim you are half right in the fact that sending them to Private etc would be better and more glamourous but not a lot.
You guys remember well when I was shooting the stills for Private with Ernie way back it was kind of the top of tree for them. Girls like Solange, Stacy Owen, Andrea Clark. It was almost an honour ( similar in a way to being in Playboy which isn't as outragous as it sounds).
If we form a UNION. Some twat will spoil it and undercut or do a deal. The nature and history of this biz tells us that.
I don't know the answer but if we don't find one soon I'm fearful !

erm...as a new entrant but someone who has done a lot of research, this industry has not changed since cine film so I feel comments directed towards gonzo and similar sites somewhat puzzling. No offence meant but you established guys seem somewhat unnerved by the competition!! Firstly there is probably more talent out there than you have ever had, yes the big porn stars of the past are no more because they were among a handfull of girls that would fuck on cam...that is no longer the case. Girls are happier earning the same rate for a 2/3hr gonzo shoot than being fucked stupid for 8 hrs on a professional set, ther'e a lot more clued up and don't have the illusion that just because they star in a big budget movie there career path is assured. Don't bellitle the little guys as after all you started somewhere, and you can only be sure of one thing ,you may not like it but with todays technology the industry will change.

Don't get me wrong I have great respect for these pioneers, they invested a lot of bread and took risks, but the fact is the average guy can now walk into Comet with a grand and fit himself out with kit that gives the quality of stuff that would have cost a kings ransom a few years ago. likewise with the girls, to fuck a pornstar in my younger days was an unachievable fantasy (a bit like shagging Liz Taylor) but a lot now escort so thats that fantasy out the window. Im not a porn conoisuer I only know what I like, what it cost to make, what the technical quality is? how well it's lit etc., doesn't equate to my enjoyment, I do notice if the leading lady's got a spot on her bum though....

I am certainly not dismissive of Gonzo, myself and Jim were shooting gonzo before it had a name on umatic cameras and machines that needed a cart to wheel them around in. Nothing is new! That is not my point; I thought I was saying something different.

Good luck to everyone who makes money, I shoot gonzo almost every week, I have 40, 90 min titles most of which I would class as gonzo. I love the One Eyed Jack stuff, its got balls and gives people just what they want, there is however a load of crapp out there which is just about lowering peoples expectations, porn does not have to look nasty to be dirty!
Seymourepussy? must know things I don?t to suggest that there is this great amount of untapped talent out there who have just picked up a camera and become porn producers, all power to their trigger fingers but I have to say I don?t feel the slightest bit unnerved by anything I have seen coming from all this talent, take a look at the rubbish dished out on most of the adult TV channels for some prime examples of the results of this talented workforce. Oh, yes I think you are right about the industry changing, it?s a historical fact that when you have loads of crapp on the surface sooner or later it will sink to the bottom and, yes, the best will float along and not even no the pretenders have sunk without trace.
I have progressed with the times, the techniques, the equipment the market requirements but I still find it a bit strange the way it?s gone, that?s all.

Can only agree that a lot of stuff out there is shit but it's what people seem to want, you only have to look at the reality tv jungle crap which attracted more viewers than a costume drama which in both content and technical expertise is far superior all round.

Dave I have the answer I had it 3 years ago, I am sure Rem will tell you I did the distribution thing and it worked, British stuff...and everyone got paid I stood the expensise and gave back producers cash to make more product while distributing their product everywhere.....Why it fucked up is common knollege if you dont know ring me,
I can make it work again and this year will. This morning I collect the keys to my new 2000sq foot office and design lab In Brighton (well Southwick) where a bus shelter costs the same as a three bedroom flat in Manchester. I see the main problem is the ego's of the industry blocking the way I can work with most people and appart from a few fukwits I could get on with anyone. The problem is everyone wants to lead and few want to follow. I can call all the big guys like DS/Gold and talk to them, because of that occasionally I get called a few names (again by fukwits who don't know me) but this has to be done. To succeed it takes a mixture of dipplomacy, enthusiam, knowlege of the current market, understanding of the current laws. It takes the finance to deliver the goods as well as make them. It take the technoligy to deliver to the market.....and you just have to be crazy enough to cause someone a whole load of grief if they mess with you. Its all part of a master plan. I am working on.
