Hi Guys

I agree Dave that non Sullivan shops do find it hard to get a license, even though small town's are allowed 2 shops by law they always find some excuse not to let you open e.g. within 500 yards from a school, to near the local church, not in busy high streets. We know this because a friend as opened 2 shops & is looking at a further 3 in other districts, saying this the council opened a youth drop in centre facing a sex shop in Chelmsford so this means even when you've got an established shop something changing in the district can effect your license.
So with not enough outlets in the UK its hard for producers to make the money for big scale films, we had one planned in a old English mansion starring some big names but after working out the budget we would have to sell silly amount to recoupe our money hence its back to normal suck & fuck films until things pick up in the market.
Its a pity there are not enough viable producers to set up a collective in which we could open shops & distribute our goods at a scale to take on the Sullivan empire but maybe one day.

There are more than enough producers Kim - it's the getting together bit where it always will and indeed always did fall down !

Videokim has partly answered Jack Horny's poser here. But I believe he's deluding himself if he thinks it's a lack of outlets that has taken the steam out of porno sales. It's not a lack of outlets Kim; it's a lack of punters. There is absolutely no problem accessing porno in the UK today, whether it be down at your local sex emporium, your favourite moody mail order outfit, the dodgy geezer down the boot sale, you pals at work, the 'three clicks and your there internet' or whatever. Porno punters are sorted. No, the problem is a familiarity with porn (Like, yawn-a-rama man.) and a growing disenchantment with contemporary porn (Yuck! Gross out-a-rama dude!) There's simply not much appetite left for it. Oh, it'll never go away. They'll always be a constant background demand. But this background demand will be spread out between umpteen small time producers who are lucky if that actually make a living. I'm afraid they don't, and will never have, enough dough to even contemplate making a quality production - with top performers, hair, make-up, and wardrobe girls. Top lighting, locations, scripts, art director, professional post-production and marketing budget etc.

Kim, you?ve got to get your head round this - Things are not "going to pick up in the market" This is it. The only way things could pick up in the British market is if it suddenly became fashionable with mainstream audiences like it did in the States in the 70?s with early movies like 'Deep Throat' and 'Behind The Green Door.' Or, as it did in the mid eighties when technology allowed the mass market to access some of these novel, exotic, erotic, fabled porno movies that they had heard about - Which they did in substantial numbers and them thought "Ho hum. So, that's porno movie, hey? Groovy." And then they went away, got on with their lives, didn't give porno much more thought, and have never really felt the inclination to pursue it since. Maybe one could imagine a scenario where a few lairy, vacuous 'celebrities' started espousing the merits of porno and this caught on amongst 'the in crowd.' Then, if perchance they were not immediately trashed by the mainstream media, and if (I know it's an outlandish proposition, but indulge me) that self same media picked up on the trend and started running with it - ?20 Things you Never Knew About Porno, But Were Afraid To Ask? articles, and ?Make Better Amateur Porno - Our Resident Expert ?Dickwad Dave? Gives You The Low-Down? Then ordinary mainstream punters would start flocking to buy porno ? not particularly because they liked it. But as with most things fashionable, because they believe it would them look cool if they have the latest OEJ release, give them some street cred. Anyhow, the upshot would be huge porno sales. Same way as the latest Celebrity pop-tart single can immediately reach number one ? even though it the most tedious, vacuous, banal trash you have ever heard. But this is a fanciful proposition and unlikely to come about.

I have on a number of occasions come up against this fanciful 'El Dorado' idea some in the industry have that there is some huge untapped well of punters out there, punters who are simply gagging for porno, but just do not know how, or where to get it. But comes on guys (and gals ? alright there Anna?) I know it?s not much fun facing up to grim, grey, reality. But admitting that you have a problem is the first step you need to take in dealing with that problem.

We've had this discussion before about the 'finite market' of punters......but what then makes the Euro/US markets so different? Surely the punters there have similar ease-of-access to the Net, etc, and presumably become equally 'jaded'; so why isn't this driving down the quality in those countries? Is it solely about bigger catchment areas?

Steady on Phil...Richard Dunn wasn't that bad :o)

Ok, he wasn't Ali standard but to put him in perspective..don't know if you're familiar with the likes of Lenny Mclean but Cliff Field knocked Lenny sparko twice..and Richard Dunn slaughtered Cliff.

Yeah, basically. There are a quarter of a billion potential punters there, many with higher disposable incomes than in Europe. Plus, the big porno companies have the links to syndicate their programs round the globe. There's a different culture to. In the liberal parts there's a "Wheyhey! What the fuck" attitude to porno, where as throughout the UK porno is still portrayed by the media as being disgusting, naff, and for losers, with the consequence that anyone of any calibre just doesn?t want anything to do with it. This perception has been compounded over recent years by the coarsening, cheapening, and dumbing down of production values. Although porn is more acceptable in a legal sense now, in a cultural sense it is probably naffer that a decade ago, when at least it had a frisson of glamour.

There's simply a lot more dough circulating out there in LA and when the Yanks do anything they have culture of doing it properly and doing it big time, while we, I'm ashamed to admit, have a culture of doing it on the cheap, however naff it is going to turn out.
