My general response is of course any organisation can decide to give awards and places restrictions on who will be considered for some or all awards. e.g. they must have worked for the organisation.

However any restrictions must be made clear to all at the outset.

Automatically making eliminations behind closed doors because e.g. the contender has never worked for the organisation IMO is wrong.

So would you expect to be invited to an annual awards event held by, Tescos or ICI or any other organisation that wanted to thank its staff? The SHAFTAS is an award event for those that have either starred or produced shows for the TV station in the previous year. There are no "Closed doors" subscribers and fans go their website and vote. There are a very broad range of awards that cover virtually everything.

At the end of the day the SHAFTAS is a private event held by a company for its staff, what's so wrong with that? To be honest in all my 20 years in porn I can't recall a big porn company, other than TVX, EVER rewarding its stars and producers with a, Champagne soaked evening out in Central London at a swish venue ALL for free!

Good on them, I can't wait for next year!

I've been working for Playboy TV for over 10 years, and as long as I've been there we've never had an awards bash. So, Cathy you've got my backing there...not that you need it. This post is meaningless.

I'm AMAZED that people don't see the SHAFTAs for what it is. It's a marketing stunt to raise brand-awareness and get people (myself included I guess) talking about TVX.

Nothing more, nothing less. Work it out. Shame I have to bump this post.

Jim I have no issues with TVX, or any other private company, having an awards event but it must be clear in the title of the awards that only those who have worked for TVX are eligible.

Taking your Tesco example it is the difference between an award titled
'Best Tesco checkout operator of 2011'
and one titled
'Best checkout operator of 2011'
for which only Tesco staff were considered.
The latter is fundamentally misleading even if clarified in the small print the award was only for Tesco staff.

Well thats wherfe it went wrong,it wasnt only people who have worked for them who where there.
I know a few people who went who was nothing to do with them at all and infact havent done anything in the adult industry

Hi Cathy...My bad for not stating the correct channel you were part of but im sure years ago you was mentioned in The Sport as well as Phil for winning a plethora of awards.

I say this because it is similar to what is being discussed here. Its not a criticism. Im all in favour of awards, including Killergram and Benson Medias comment not so long ago about doing their own awards...Why not? Go for it? Celebrate the talent or the best scene/ niche in your anual out put as Mr C said, its a marketing tool to raise brand awareness and promote the talent which TVX has been accused of not creating a foundation for porn stars to amke names for themselves.

A psuedo "Oscars" awards night at a swish location is a good start as any to redress this criticism

As far as I know, all the contestants were TVX contributors whether they were affiliated with TVX or not is irrlevlant. If I really wanted to I couldve attended by being allowed in later with the general public

Who cares about all that inner working stuff, it was a great night for the fans to go hang out and see some of their favourite boys and girls in the flesh...People here should be even more grateful that TVX facilitated this.

Im not bigging up TVX beyond just saying whats right is right and probably why I keep responding to this.

It's only known about by a very small minority of 'porn geeks' who know pornstars' names, and collect films. I use the word 'geek' in a friendly sense. I'm a plug-in 'geek'..and I'm proud!

The general public would refer to pornstars as (example off the top of my head)....

....Megan Coxx as - "that brunette fit bit", or Angel Long as " that blonde who took it in the arse"

Our pornstars are rarely known by name, there is no 'celebrity' in British porn, which renders the awards meaningless to the general public.
