Speaking of "flat view" how about also putting the "go to top" & "go to topic" thingys at the bottom of a flat viewed thread aswell as the top in order to negate the need to scroll all the way back up to the top of a lengthy elephant related thread to click on "go to top" or "go to topic".

Just a minor improvement I thought of using my elephant sized bonce.
