I suppose I must be one of those who is accused of anti US sentiments but I am not anti american just anti Bush.
I have visited America and stayed in the homes of American friends in LA, San Francisco and other parts of the country. By and large I find americans to be nice people. The twin towers tragedy upset me too but its no reason to assume all muslims hate America. For the record I am not a muslim I am a white european. Unfortunately the US public dont seem to have the ability to distrust thier governments motives or foreign poilicies. For example we Brits have a long tradition of satire aimed at our leaders which the USA dont have. A TV show such as Spitting Image or Rory Bremner would not go down well in the USA and a mag like Private Eye would not sell. They regard criticising thier government as equivelant of criticising themselves or thier country which is a niave and innocent way of looking at things. It is healthy to question our leaders and to be sceptical about them.
And as WG pointed out Iraq/Saddam had nothing to do with the attack in New York.
XXL if you really believe that muslims hate america you are typical of the blinkered views that cause many people to despair at your nations narrow minded views.
I like Americans. But I must admitt I prefer Americans who can think for themselves rather than blindly swallowing propoganda from Murdoch owned media such as Fox News and various others who repeat Bushs crap.

And on the subject of weapons of mass destruction. If he had any he would surely have fired them at Kuwait or at invading Allied Forces by now.
Makes you think doesnt it?
XXl please dont think I dislike Americans because its not true.

Re: Ode to America
If you think attacking IRAQ and ending Saddams reign will make us safer
think again
Iraqs weapons of mass destruction might be neutralised but then what about the other 20 or so states that have biological & chemical weapons
I agree that Saddam needed to be deposed but war wasn't the long term answer
War/Conflict has never solved any problems in the long term just the short
Israel is the perfect example...one of the mosy potent armies in the world
and they still can't guarantee there citizens total safety
As Nostradamus predicted at the start of this century there would be a 30 year war between Muslims & Christians...seems he might have been right
We will never be SAFE again IMHO
cheers

Re: Ode to America
Too right Buttsie.
Anti Western feelings in the Middle East are being fuelled by this attack. Particularly while the US funds Isreal and its flagrant breaches of UN Resolutions. Isreal also have a nuclear weapons program which is against the non proliferation agreement. Add that to Isreals human rights abuses and shooting dead of stone throwers and demolition of homes belonging to opposers of the regime (something which the British Army would not have dared do in Ireland) makes it all stink IMHO.

Re: Ode to America
XXL dont forget we in Britain have suffered from terrorism for decades from the IRA. The IRA got most of thier money from collections in Irish Bars in your home town and also New York. Noraid etc
Mmmmm.........Suddenly the Irish-American romantic idea of the freedom fighter has collapsed since your own country has been a victim of terrorism. A man from my own home town was killed by the IRA and buried in a field. He was an SAS Captain working under cover so I suppose a fair target but when I see his mother in the supermarket and the sadness in her eyes it brings it home. We in the UK have had kids blown up by IRA bombs in Warrington etc and some of that will be funded from New York and Chicago Irish. So think of that before you start lecturing us on terrorism.

All points and opinions are well taken.
I really appreciate strong opinions and points that differ from mine. But that does not make mine wrong or yours right or vice versa.
I, as you, will not change the way I feel about people who prey on innocent people.
Magoo,
I live in a huge Irish in the Chicago area as my parents came from Ireland.
I will tell one thing. I HATE the IRA as much as any terrorist from anywhere on the globe. To see families and loved ones suffer from cowardly acts of violence is totally unacceptable in my world. Anyone who practices this type of terror should pay in a big way whatever that may mean.
Anyway ........
Let's get back to porn where we all agree is good for us all.

Re: Ode to America
My Nostradamus reference to his phrophecy of the a third world war starting in 2002
With the help of George W Bush its well on its way
Just glad we(Australia) are in the axis of good
I wonder whos going to cop the first attack...Uncle Sam,UK or Australia
Theres a clear difference betwen your example of War and the Current one
Hitler was the aggressor as was saddam In 1991...and rightly were attacked and defeated
Is Saddam the aggressor this time?...I don't think so
Flimsy arguments about terrorist connections are not a reason for War IMHO
As I have said previously the World needs to destroy all stocks of Weapons of Mass destruction....not just those in so called Rogue states
What is so laughable about all this is that the West through France,Germany
& the USA have supplied most of these weapons to him
cheers

Re: Ode to America
Hey xxl, what gives you the idea that your "English brothers" are on the same side as you? I would have thought that most of the opinions expressed so far have been opposed to the current invasion of Iraq. But anyone who believes that there is an established connection between the Twin Towers episode and Saddam Hussein even tho' there has been no evidence presented, will believe anything.
Btw xxl, not everyone in t.he UK is English.

Re: Ode to America
I too come from an Irish background as do many Brits in industrial areas Britain eg Liverpool, Birmingham Manchester, Tyneside, Glasgow etc. I guessed you might also be slightly Irish coming from Chicago and all. And I am glad you have acknowledged that terrorism in all forms is evil including the IRA with its US funding. So we agree on that at least. Now what about Isreal and its USA funded atrocities?
