Every few years they call in Shimon Peres to try to broker peace, he does so, then the Israelis vote in some hardliner (Sharon, Netanyahu) who takes the "no surrender" stand to gain votes and ensure the orthodox groups keep them in power.

It's such a small country (in comparison) but has violence written into virtually every hilltop. The only place of almost comparable intolerance and distrust I can think of is Northern Ireland.
