Where are Double Indemnity, Point Blank and Straight Time? All influential, all better than SOTL (and a couple of other movies in the Empire top 10, IMHO).
I think the scope of the list is too broad, myself. By including SOTL and 12 Angry Men, they suggest that by 'crime' they aren't just talking about cops and robber movies (French Connection), or movies where the criminals are shown as anti-heroes (Goodfellas) and so on.
It's just typical of Empire's approach to cinema - if it's not a blockbuster, or you can't fit it into a convenient list, then it tends to get swept under the carpet. So they create a top 10 'crime' list which means absolutely sweet FA. It boils my piss, it really does?

Watched Mel Gibson in Payback on Ch 5 last night. Forgot how good a film that is.

Is it my imagination or was that a remake of 60/70's film with Lee Marvin?

Calm down. Empire irritates for sure, but it sets its stall out fairly clearly so you should know what to expect. I'd wager that a Sight and Sound top ten would also annoy, in it's own obtuse way.

you're thinking of john boorman's masterly point blank. unbelievably, this masterpiece is still to gain a dvd release of any sort and when you consider some of the trash that gets given every bell and whistle going.

maybe it's not so surprising when you consider that we're also waiting on - 'once upon a time in the west', 'the magnificent ambersons', 'ju dou' (academy ratio), 'mutiny on the bounty (1935)', 'the bedford incident', 'looking for richard', 'death line', 'the happiest days of your life' 'meet me in st. louis' 'eagles wing' etc, etc...
