FREE PC utilities

There are a number of free packages on the web which
you can install that will help the security of your machine.
Some do chargable versions as well, but I use just the free
version of all of them and they are small to download and
easy to install and setup.
Zone Alarm - Firewall - a free version is available. It controls
what programs go 'out' to the web from your machine, it also
controls what program come into your machine from the web.
You are asked before anything goes out or comes in. You can
set it so certain programs (like Internet Explorer) do not ask you
every time.
AVG - Anti Virus - works the same as other AV tools. Make sure
you keep your definitions file up to date.
Adaware - Spyware detection - you would be amazed at how
many companies 'spy' on your internet habits. Install adaware
and it will tell you all the spyware on your machine and ask if you
want it deleted.
Winpatrol - keeps track of all Windows 'services' running on your
machine and what they are, also lets you know if another program
tries to get itself installed on your machine.
If you install these 4 free products then you should be fairly safe.

Re: FREE PC utilities
Zone Alarm is excellent for keeping the unseen traffic(mindblowing when you see it in action) that slows down us 56kers at bay
Adaware 6.0 finds more spies than the others-bare in mind it deletes the spies-Can cause downloaded programs to stop running
Spybot is the alternative-its leaves the spies on your computer but neutralises them-seems to be a problem with their updates in recent times
Thanks for the Winpatrol tip will give it a try-sounds useful
cheers
