The US didn't enter WWI until the Germans sank The Lusitania.

There is an interesting conspiracy theory about Pearl Harbour... That there was prior knowledge of an impending Japanese attack but it was allowed to happen so that the US would have no option but to join the Allies.

The Lusitania was sunk in May 1915; the US entered the war in April 1917. That's slow by anyone's standards, and kind of suggests that the Lusitania was an excuse rather than the main reason. Put into perspective, it's like the US waiting until late 1943 before declaring war because of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

A more believable reason was the so-called Zimmerman telegram, a document inciting the Mexicans to attack the southern US states to ensure they wouldn't get involved in the European conflict. More than likely, that telegram didn't come from the German foreign ministry but from the British secret services.
