They still have National Service. You can refuse on the usual grounds but you will never get a job as a teacher or civil servant.

yeah great film Ace, Dicky Attenborough is great in it as are the rest of the cast, this was probably a golden era of action/disaster/western movies which sadly we will never see again, along with the brilliant ?Wizard of Oz? they must rank as being the most viewed movies of all time, same again next year ... yes please.

But why was Steve McQueen put in the cooler at the end when
all the other escapees that were returned did not ?.

Was it so that Steve McQueen could look cool, the loner, and
also grab the closing shot ?

I must admit I wanted to watch it (again) but got outvoted by
the rest of the family.

I think it was because he was American escapee whilst the rest were British Officers that were on a 'final warning'.
