This comment may cause some contention, but for how long have people in the UK lived with the threat of terror hanging over our heads at the hands of the IRA? Or the Spanish and their visitors from the Basque separatists?

I have no political leanings either way and don't really take that much interest in the news, so my comments may be simplistic and little naive.

That was part of my original point.....it's all a bit new to the US (at least in its present form), whereas Europe has learned to endure it much as a necessary evil, like Eastenders and Income Tax.

Forcing their culture down everyone's throats??? Not sure what you mean by that, but don't you think killing 3,000 civillians is perhaps a little harsh in response? Still, they're only Americans so that's okay, isn't it?

The fault is partially in the design of the forum woodgnome and yes, I know you didn't design it. I can't understand why there is a box inviting people to reply always there ready for confusing responses.

If such a thing is happening, it's with the collusion of a major part of our society. Management in Briton is now bilingual, with bollocks overtaking English as more and more "buzz" phrases that mean absolutely f-all sneak into our language. Council and company hand-outs are filled with meaningless phrases that drivel backwards and forwards before shagging themselves up the arse. Politicians gleefully grasp these sentences as they always have (didn't one Dickens book feature the office of circumlocution?), eager to try out responses that don't involve them saying yes or no, and when looked at carefully can be proved to have said nothing at all.

As for broadcasters, they want to sound so urgent and important that they also steal sound-bite phrases and employ them whether they fit or not.

There is also a school of thought that American travellers will not be happy until they cannot tell the Czech Republic, for example, from Oregon: they'll be able to find their McDonald's or Burger King, their Starbucks, their Travel Lodge, etc. Almost entirely inaccurate, of course, but with enough plausibility to set off the paranoia chip in most of us.

Oh, and I'm not usually in favour of terms that have come from across the pond, but please go to the top of the class, BC, for giving us "drive-by insults." I likes it.
