Hello jj. I've not kept records, but there have been numerous examples. I think the guy who murdered Lesley Whittle was one. Actually I don't think we are disagreeing over this. You are quite right that it is not valid mitigation but 'our learned friends' will always try it on. According to the 1959 Obscene Publications Act much of de Sade's work was pornographic, at least at the time of the moors murder, but that is another argument.

It's strange that you can think of numerous examples, yet I can't think of even one. Anyway, the main reason I'd like to have known would be in order to go round and beat the trial judge to death with his own wig, for being so monumentally stupid.
And of course, in 1959 the OPA also 'obscenitised' DH Lawrence..........
I beleive around that time there was a case in Yorkshire where a man was had up for having a knee-trembler in a shop doorway. After receiving his sentence, the lad said to the judge: 'I'll tell 'ee summat, joodge: tha'll never stop fookin' in Bradford'.

As I suspected jj, we are actually singing from the same hymn sheet. I was never suggesting that it was acceptable for people to use there viewing of pornography as an excuse for crime. The problem with pornography is that its most vehement critics, usually, have a very poor knowledge of the subject. I remember a Hancock's Half Hour back in the fifties, Tony was reading a book and said to either Sid James or Bill Kerr, "This is red hot, mate. When I have finished reading it, I shall go out and try to get it banned." I am afraid that sums up the whole attitude of the so-called moral majority. I know a guy who is very anti and nothing will convince him that everyone in the trade is not coerced. This is the mind step you are dealing with.

You are right about the Whittle case. It was Donald Nielsen, otherwise known as the Black Panther. I believe he worked on a building site and his favorite trick was to wait for one his workmates to go up a ladder and then saw the rungs out! Surprised he didn't get GBH'd.

I think in view of the interesting debate I've had with you that a new topic may be worthwhile. What is pornography?

....and the Freudians would tell us that those most vehemently opposed to something are often those most desperately trying to suppress their own real feelings about it. Interesting, if true.......
I find it interesting too that in a supposedly secularised society we still have the taboos of Judaeo-Christianity, rather than thinking up some newer, more germane ones, perhaps one against chewing gum in the street, or using a mobile in public.........

The First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to TIMOTHY. Chapter6 verse 10.

St Paul's First Epistle to Timothy contains some of the more wacky verses in the bible. Although too long to quote here, Chapter 2 verse 9-15 is one of the main reasons why women have been treated as second class citizens throughout the ages. St Paul makes it clear that in his view they are inferior to men and fit only for childbirth, because the serpent only tempted Eve, not Adam. Therefore St Paul's view on money needs to be treated with some caution!
