Morgan is not stupid enough to have been taken in, surely? You can't be the ed. of a tabloid without a high degree of bullshit-sensitivity.
So, the reasonable conclusion is that he colluded in the perpetration of a hoax- he is guilty, either of a frankly unbelieveable level of stupidity, or of being cynical enough to publish them knowing that they were faked.
Not quite the same as Gilligan, but broadly similar.
