Yes, you're right - the quality slipped as Turner's hand slipped sadly from the wheel, and with Who still seen by many as partly a kids thing (as it started) that tentative darker path was perhaps the right choice.
Sadder still, as it's been said before, a certain generation had perhaps been immunised to DW's charms by an altogether more insiduous evil coming from the Hollywood hills.
