Re: Muslim women + veils
C.J. You're right in that we all need to be more understanding of eachother. Knowledge is nothing without understanding. However, what Peter is trying to put across is that Muslims come to the western world for a better life, yet want to live by their own laws.
A taxi driver in the UK (I'm guessing the USA too?) would be ashamed if he refused a blind man a ride because of his guide dog. It's discrimination, and something blacks try their hardest to abolish from society. A Muslim taxi driver who refuses a blind man a lift because he thinks the guide dog is 'unclean' is discriminating, full stop.
Muslims want the 'western lifestyle' when it comes to safety, job opportunities, education, and healthcare, but want to live in a western country by their own laws. Maybe discriminating blind men is acceptable in Pakistan, Iran or Suadi Arabia, but not here. The reason the western world is a better lifestyle is that our ancestors have fought and died for thousands of years to get the freedoms & lifestyle we now lead. They don't respect that at times....
A guy up the road from me got arrested a few years back for theft. He complained that the police were too 'rough' with him when they arrested him, and he complained his human rights were violated. The guy had only lived in Britain 2 years and came from Saudi Arabia. If he'd have been convicted of theft in SA he could well have had both hands chopped off as punishment! Why the hell was he complaining about human rights? He should feel lucky that he wasn't back home!
I live in a large Muslim community, and have done for 22 years. I see lots of Muslim friends go back to Pakistan/Iraq/Iran/Yeman/Saudi Arabia etc, to see relatives and always come home telling me how great their county is, yet if they ever get into trouble with the law they run straight to the British embassy crying, wanting the next flight back to the UK. Why?
Maybe we should start letting Muslim girls wear their own clothes & a hijab in schools, instead of the traditional school uniforms that all the other kids have to wear. Maybe we should allow Muslim women to keep their vails on when walking into a bank, while the white guy has to take his motercycle helmet off.............. I'm all for that if we can have an Islamic policeforce over here if they commit crimes. I wonder how many western Muslims would like this? Next time a Muslim youth gets picked up for drug dealing on a UK street the Islamic police can drag him in a back alley and kick him to death, just like in the middle east? Maybe that comfy British prison cell wouldn't be quite so bad then eh? I'm all for giving them Muslim law, if it's the full works.
Of course this would never be allowed over here and quite right. Put they can't migrate to a western society and not expect to live by our laws. If your religion clashes with a certain countries laws, you shouldn't move there. I have no religion and like going out drinking with my girlfriend. She wear short skirts & low cut tops on occasion because she's allowed to. Wouldn't it be stupid for us to migrate to Saudi Arabia and expect us to go out to a club dressed that way without being arrested? Would the Suadi authorities make exceptions for white women when it came to dress in public? Of course they wouldn't, and I wouldn't expect them to either! I'm in their country, and while there I'd respect their laws and customs.
Why can't they accept that living in the UK means that they have to live by UK laws, and am I wrong to feel a little angry?

I always thought that people should be able to wear what they want in a free society, but you've made an interesting point: clearly this is all part of a Muslim plot to rob banks! The fiends!!

Just going on the ones I know and have spoken to and things I have seen
Just an opinion - take it I still have one - or should I shut up and stand down like the muslim women?

I just ordered The God Delusion... looks like a right riveting read.
On the France point - they've also banned Sikh turbans, Jewish skullcaps, Christian crosses. It's also illegal to wear an image of a cannabix leaf. On balance, I prefer the British way.

Re: Muslim women + veils
Well I don't see nothing wrong with culture. There's no law here saying that women can't wear a burka or hijab and is considered a headdress. Remember, it's common curtiousy for MAN to take off his HAT when he enters a room and we're talking about WOMEN. AS for these guys crying foul when the get abused by the police, well people shouldn't break laws granted, but you shouldn't have to be "abused" when you get arrested. The cabbies of pakastani or indian desent here are a little more understanding EXCEPT when dealing with black people even when dressed in a suit and tie (go figure!). This thing about respecting the laws is not new and a majority of immigrants wherever they come from do respect them but the thing you have to also remember is there are extremes some people don't like, for instance the hijab? (It don't matter to me! I look at the person). I think Y'ALL might be overreacting BECAUSE of people being of different cultures, values, etc and Y'ALL can't stand them if they don't conform. When it comes to things like cabbies who won't let a blind person ride in a cab because they can't deal with the seeing eye dog, that's something we should deal with. The hijab? As the comedien Ron White would say, "let it go"!

Who are "they"? What evidence do you have that "they" don't like abiding by UK law? Here in Brent, living within minutes of several mosques, a Pakistani community centre, a couple of Muslim bookshops and the largest Islamic school in Britain, I see no problems with "them" abiding by British law
The only exceptions I see are the school run mums who double-park their SUVs and some of the teenagers who smoke weed in the street. So just like the local white people really.

Not much chance of that... the lynch mob hasn't had so much fun in years.

I agree! For the most part there are the ones who abide by the laws of the land and here in the states, if I had to give a percentage, 99% to 100% do well here WITHOUT having to give up their culture. I admit I haven't seen any muslim women covering their faces but I have seen A LOT of them wearing hijabs though.
