Like you, I cannot understand this mythos around the Krays and other gangsters. Look at the tabloids, and they fall over one another trying to sign up serial rights for crime bosses' memoirs. Who in their right mind wants to read about these creeps?

This could explain why I've never wanted to watch The Sopranos, and didn't really take to Goodfellas. The Godfather movies I could cope with, since it was watching a decent man becoming a monster. But stuff glorifying gangsters, nah!
