They had to change it about three-quarters of the way through WW1 after their original name caused offence to the families of the dead and wounded solider's, sailor's and airmen!

They were originally called Saxe-Cobug and Gotha which was the family name of Prince Albert who was Queen Victoria's consort and when they married in 1840 she took his family name. Their eldest son, Edward, carried this name when he became King in 1901, and his son, George, used it up until 1917 when after a huge public outcry it was deemed to be unpatriotic!!
