For longevity of the trousers I'd advise leaving the split as is
After all we all fart
The added bonus is you can show off your new knickers
I do concur with your advise in relation to shoes
Blue/Green gaffer tape is the new must have accessory for anyone wanting to stand out as it were.A damn sight better than in your hair

You laugh and mock but take a look at many of those at film premiers and tell me that airing of the fabric wasn't foremost in the designers mind

Many would say not
I suspect it helps to keep your mind focussed on the dollar signs when your re-inventing the same thing over & over,one would say you'd have to be stark raving mad

No. Black gaffer tape for black shoes. I mean you're going out wearing gaffer taped split shoes so you don't want that fact to be made public, you want to blend into your surrounds!

Equally as good is returning them to the place of purchase for a new pair
Done it 5 times in the past 6 months...brilliant
If they don't show signs of aging use a spade on the sole
