question that bugs me
Re: question that bugs me
Read about quantum physics, and the crucial role of what happens if there is an observer and what happens if there isn't. Particularly Schrodinger's Cat.

Morning!..........well, afternoon!
We're arguing over the word 'sound'.
Ask yourself what silence means. Is there such a thing? We agree that vibrations are just atoms banging together, and the vibrations are determined by the speed the atoms, and their relativity to eachother (frequency). So there cannot ever be total silence; only vibrations at a frequency we cannot detect.
I understand where you're coming from Wazza, and was just enjoying myself last night with our debate. You would have been more accurate if you had stated that the frequencies of vibrations would still exist whether somebody is there to detect them or not, and you could call that range of frequencies, sound.
My opinion is that the the vibrations exist, but I cannot name them as 'sound'.
To me, sound is just vibrations that have been translated, so to speak. You mention 'hearing sound', while I like to refer to hearing as the receiving and translation of vibrations.
Basically, we are in disagreement with the terminology used.
These vibrations are popularly known as sound waves!
Don't get into the wave v particle debate. I'm not into quantum mechanics, and it's Sunday afterall. Personally, actual waves don't exist, although it is a way of making the science more understandable.
You and your sly physics related digs.
God, I get shouted at for everything these days! It's so unfair!

Sorry Wazzmeister, but me, the argumentative shitehouse? It would be 3rd world war if you were in charge of the UN! Bloody hell....
As for you having a point.....
sound 1. a sensation caused in the ear by the vibration of the surrounding air or other medium. (from Oxford English Dictionary)
Wazza, just type the following:
"Sammikins, what can I say; I was a fool, and should know better by now. I feel such a donkey!"
!laugh!
