Not exactly Leninism. On paper it works, though I know in practice it didn't, and wouldn't.

I do feel that a planned economy will be the future....although not in our life times.

In an infinite Univerese, even the possibility of a finite Universe is possible.

Hi Dibble , I take exception to the below statement

'This is the kind of third world crap you might expect in Zimbabwe'

Having been in a General Hospital in Mutare (Zimbabwe) I can asure you that this sort of action would not occur

I've worked in the NHS all my career. Firstly as a Learning Disabilities nurse and now one of these infamous managers / bureaucrats that get blamed for everything.

This story was shocking and these infections are IMO the biggest issue facing the NHS currently. Though you have to accept that there will always be infections (people in hospital are generally ill after all so prone to infections) standards have slipped in many areas and I've observed this in my work and personal life when visiting relatives. Fortunately, I know what should happen so can 'highlight this' to staff when looking after my loved ones.

In terms of 'where's the dough gone' though you have to accept that the NHS is massive. Most of what goes on is done very well and in a very cost-effective way (contrary to the media who only want to discuss the bad stories). Most people work very hard, do their best and often deliver excellence despite governmental and political interference.

There will NEVER be enough money for what everyone wants. And this view that the NHS is over-funded is ridiculous. When it was introduced in the 40's it was only funded enough to be a temporary thing as the plan was that this short-term funding would stop people being ill (!?!?) and mean that hospitals and things weren't needed long-term. That was the view into the 60's so the NHS was working from a start point that was way behind in terms of the funding that was really needed. We have probably caught up a lot and not far from what we should be but hope this gives a bit of an 'insider' perspective.

Kind rgds

What makes this worse is that 90+ people are known to have died unecessary in one hospital and not one senior minister was available to make a comment on it, instead it was left to the Junior Minister for Health to mumble a few words about how they are getting on top of it, now god forbid but if these people had died in a terrorist incident No Balls Brown would have been shouting all over the house with condemnation but so far he has said nothing about the 90 people who have died in Maidstone maybe he dosnt think its important enough to even make a brief statement !sad!

I stand corrected, Jonboy. It would seem things are worse than I feared.

Interesting to hear an insiders view. I agree that infections have always been a reality of stays in hospital - I recall catching a ringworm bug during a hospital stay in the 70's.

You say standards have slipped in recent years - could you expand on that? In what particular areas have they dropped? Also, how do hospital staff react when you 'highlight' the failings of their care?

"No Balls Brown would have been shouting all over the house with condemnation but so far he has said nothing about the 90 people who have died in Maidstone maybe he doesn?t think its important enough to even make a brief statement "

He doesn?t want to make a statement or say anything else that would focus voter?s attention on an issue like this. He?s probably praying to God that the whole thing will quickly go away. Because as I?ve already alluded to, this is the man that has stealthily raised our taxes claiming he needed the extra dough to make hospitals much better. Well, he?s took the money off us, but with some hospitals near bankruptcy and people dying apparently because hospitals are not being cleaned to the standard they were, say 20 years ago, voters are going to think ?Hold on a minute. Are we being shafted here? Is Gordon taking the Mick??
