Yes and no. Britain and France were shit scared of Germany in 1938, but German rearmament was not as great as they feared. By gifting Czechoslovakia to Germany, they gave the Nazis an advanced industrial nation. A quarter of the tanks the Germans used to invade France were actually made in Czechoslovakia, and even so between them Britain and France had more tanks than the Germans, but they did not use them properly.

So German rearmament was a bit of a con job in 1938, Germany was not really as strong as people thought. As I said, until it became clear in 1942 that the war in Russia was going to be a long one, Germany had not even geared up for total war. When they did, from 1943 on, industrial production increased, despite all the bombing. Germany produced more weapons in 1944 than any other year of the war, whereas Britain, the USA and Russia had the sense to give it maximum effort from day one. Just as well.

Hitler was a political activist who came to notice of Roem of the Army staff who first raised money for Hitler from the Army. He gave him sum of 60,000 marks to buy the newspaper the Volkisher Beobachter which became a daily paper in 1923 and brought wealth in to Hitler?s coffers. Hitler then began to receive donations from Frau Helene Beckstein of the piano company and other Munich industrialists.

Hitler was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the People?s Court after a march protesting against the banning of the Nazi Party in which there was an exchange of fire between the Nazis and the Munich police in which three police and six Nazis were killed. In the prison fortress of Landsberg am Lech Hitler wrote Mein Kampf which brought in a considerable amount of cash selling 36,000 copies in a few months. After the this the Nazi Party rose from strength to strength and its paid membership rose enormously to six and half million and over a million and half copies were sold by the time Hitler came to power. His nationalism and ideas of racially purity were widely acclaimed and it became cool to own a copy or to have read Mein Kampf.


There was a great fear of communism and of Russia after the Revolution in which the Royal Family, the Romanovs including the Czar and Czarina, and their children were murdered in cold blood. The European aristocracy throughout Europe donated hugely after reading what Hitler planned to do in Mein Kampf and so did the rich in general. The communist state owned the means of production and knew what would happen to their business if the communists took power. The Church supported Hitler against an atheist regime.

In England Sir Oswald Moseley fought in the streets against the reds. Our own Mary Whitehouse listened to a speech by the leader of the Moral Rearmament Movement Adolph Buchman, affiliated to the Oxford Group of which Mary was a member. Speaking at the Berlin 1936 Olympics he said ?Thank God for Adolph Hitler who opposes the Anti Christ in the East?

In Mein Kampf Hitler promises a moral revolution in which he proposes to clean up the theatre, the billboards and the cinema of the sickly odour of modern eroticism. He saw the sexual liberation of the Roaring Twenties as the greatest threat to society and his views were analogous to Thatcher in the Eighties who saw the ?permissive society? as the greatest threat to our own. He confiscated all the Jewish property and money and an SS officer would be paid for the work that his Jewish slaves did in the factories.

So you could say that Mein Kampf was the greatest source of Hitler?s wealth and brought about the change in his fortunes.
