It then got fucking stupid in the early '00s when Paul Marquess took over as producer. Prior to that he'd done Brookside - nuff said!
Under him it had overblown soapy storylines, ridiculous body counts, love triangles, "gay black Christian" weddings, crap characters ... you name it.
It's a bit better now, but its glory days are long gone.
